Ngorongoro Crater
Africa's Eden — a volcanic amphitheatre sheltering the densest wildlife on earth.
Courtesy of The Leading Hotels of the World
The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano whose 260-square-kilometre floor contains virtually every species of East African wildlife — an estimated 25,000 large animals including the endangered black rhino. The crater rim, rising 600 metres above the floor, is draped in cloud forest and inhabited by Maasai pastoralists who have coexisted with wildlife here for centuries. Paired with the nearby Olduvai Gorge — where the earliest evidence of human ancestry was discovered — Ngorongoro is where natural history and human prehistory converge.
