Sardinia

Granite coves, Cannonau wine, and a Mediterranean still finding its first gear.

Courtesy of Belmond Hotel Romazzino, Costa Smeralda

Sardinia keeps two parallel identities. The Costa Smeralda in the north is the Aga Khan's 1960s vision — pastel architecture, megayachts, and beaches that look airbrushed but aren't. The south is older and quieter, a coast of granite spurs and white sand where Forte Village has hosted European families for three generations. Inland, the island is shepherds, archaeology, and a wine list (Cannonau, Vermentino) that mainland Italy is only starting to discover.
