Nothing prepares you for the moment the Siq narrows to a dark canyon and then opens to reveal the Treasury, carved from rose-red sandstone two thousand years ago by the Nabataeans. Petra is not one monument but an entire city: tombs, temples, a Roman-style colonnaded street, and a monastery reached by 800 steps that rewards with views across the Wadi Araba.
We also reach the Royal Tombs and the High Place of Sacrifice above the Siq, with Aqaba the gateway south.
