May to October offers the driest weather and best diving visibility, with temperatures around 77-82°F and lower humidity. This dry season coincides with peak tourist numbers, though Taveuni remains relatively uncrowded compared to Viti Levu. November to April brings heavier rainfall and occasional cyclones, but water temperatures stay warm and rates drop significantly. Book dive trips and resorts well ahead during July and August when international visitors peak.

Plan 4-5 nights to properly experience the island without feeling rushed. Spend two days diving or snorkeling the Rainbow Reef and Great White Wall, one day hiking the Tavoro Falls trail and visiting the 180th meridian, and another exploring the Bouma National Heritage Park or kayaking the coastline. A fifth day allows for the challenging Des Voeux Peak hike or a cultural village visit. The island's limited infrastructure means you'll want time to settle into the slower pace.

Taveuni Palms Resort offers five villas on a private beach with personal chefs and dive masters, averaging $2,200-$3,000 per night all-inclusive. Matangi Private Island Resort provides beachfront bures with excellent diving access and intimate service, from $800-$1,200 per night including meals. Paradise Taveuni combines reasonable luxury at $400-$600 per night with proximity to dive sites and hiking trails. Taveuni is very safe with virtually no serious crime affecting tourists, though petty theft from unattended belongings occasionally occurs. Solo female travelers report feeling comfortable, particularly when staying at established resorts. Tap water isn't reliably drinkable—stick to bottled water and avoid ice in local establishments. The main risks are environmental: strong currents when swimming, slippery trails during wet season, and limited medical facilities requiring evacuation to Suva for serious issues.

Taveuni presents significant challenges for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. The island has no paved roads in many areas, most resorts feature stairs to reach beachfront bures, and hiking trails involve steep, uneven terrain. Arrange private boat transfers in advance rather than relying on standard water taxis. Snorkeling can be arranged from boats, but diving requires independent mobility.

Taveuni works well for families with children aged 10 and up who enjoy active outdoor pursuits. The lower Tavoro Falls is manageable for younger kids, and snorkeling in calm bays suits confident swimmers. The journey requires a small plane from Nadi and boat transfers, which can be tiring for young children. Most high-end properties have minimum age requirements of 12-16 years.

Dive the Great White Wall at Rainbow Reef, where a sheer drop-off is completely covered in white soft corals that extend hundreds of feet down. This site is genuinely extraordinary—currents bring nutrients that feed the corals, creating a living wall unlike anything in the Pacific. Go between June and September for the clearest water and plan for depths of 80-120 feet with an experienced dive operator. Most visitors remember this single dive more vividly than any other experience in Fiji.
