Hawke's Bay

Art Deco, Pinot Noir country, and the world's most theatrical farmstay above the Pacific.

Hawke's Bay sits on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island — a sun-soaked agricultural valley fringed by surf coast and dotted with the country's best wineries. Napier was levelled by a 1931 earthquake and rebuilt in pure Art Deco; the result is one of the most coherent Deco towns on earth. Twenty minutes south, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers occupies 6,000 acres of working sheep station perched 460 feet above the Pacific — a Tom Doak golf course, a gannet colony at the cliff edge, and rooms that look out at a horizon broken only by the curve of the earth.

Syrah and Chardonnay country, with a farm-to-table tradition that's at the centre of the region's identity.

  • A long dinner at Terrôir at Craggy Range, Te Mata Peak in the distance
  • Saturday morning at the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market in Hastings
The Stillness

Cliff air, vineyard light, gannet cries, and the kind of quiet that 6,000 acres provides.

  • Sunrise on the Cape Kidnappers cliffs — the gannets are already at work
  • A walk along Marine Parade in Napier as the Deco light kicks in
  • The drive up Te Mata Peak just before sunset
